Rules and conditions of entering the synagogue

Welcome to the Great Synagogue of Budapest! As this is an operating synagogue , please note that there are some rules and conditions of entering the synagogue complex:

1. The building and the adjacent cemetery are sacred areas. Please behave according to this.
2. Male visitors must cover their head inside the synagogue complex. If you have a hat, cap, hood, etc., please put it on. If you don’t have any of these , you will receive a kippah/yarmulke at the entrance – after validating your ticket – and you have to wear it during your visit in the whole complex.
4. You cannot enter the synagogue wearing inappropriate clothing, like shorts, mini-skirt or sleeveless top or dress; the staff members won’t let you go inside.
5. There is an obligatory security check by entering the complex. Please help our staff and put all your metal things, coins, telephone and camera on the table, before passing through the detector gate.
6. Your luggage cannot exceed the cabin size.
7. Please don’t leave your bag or luggage unattended at any time. If you find any unattended pack, please inform the security staff immediately about it.
8. Please note that the whole complex is a non-smoking area. Inside the synagogue, the museum and the connected areas it is strictly forbidden to eat or drink, except on the terrace of the buffet (behind the building ).
9. You cannot enter the restricted areas by the cordons.
10. Please help us protecting the monuments and the artworks with your respectful behavior.
11. Thank you for your co-operation and understanding! We wish you a pleasant stay at the Great Synagogue!
